The Benefits of Biking to Work

Biking to work isn’t a new concept, though it has gathered strength in recent years. Back in 1956 the League of American Bicyclists originated the Bike to Work Day, which is now part of Bike-to-Work Week, which in turn is part of National Bike Month. As you can see, biking to work is definitely a thing, and for good reason.

There are various advantages and arguments in favor of biking to work and as it’s become more common practice, more workplaces are providing professionals with bike storage facilities and in some cases, even showers.

Here are a few reasons why you should definitely bike to work.

Save money

The cost of gas is not getting lower, in fact it’s rising and it’ll continue rising in the coming years. Owning and using a car can get quite expensive, owning a bike, on the other hand, is much more cheaper; it doesn’t require gas, maintenance and service is cheaper, and you don’t have to pay to park it.

It’s good for your health

Biking to work means you’ll be more physically active; it gets you moving without having to pay for a gym membership (biking saves you money in areas other than gas). Cycling not only helps you burn calories, but it can also help improve your cardiovascular health, which can help reduce blood pressure and builds muscle. Moreover, we already know that exercise helps your body release endorphins, the happy hormone, which means that not only will you be healthier, but also happier.

You get to avoid traffic

Your morning and afternoon commutes won’t be as terrible when you don’t have to deal with traffic and feeling like you are wasting time. You can wave goodbye to people as they are stuck in a traffic jam while you freely advance in your bike journey. Less traffic will also likely reduce your stress and tension levels. Your commute will be all the more fun for it, trust us.

You get to enjoy fresh air

Instead of breathing in and out stale AC air all day long, you’ll get to refresh yourself with quite a few breaths of fresh air. Especially on days when you’re tired, catching a breath of fresh air and feeling it cool your face will be a wondrous feeling.

Reduce your environmental footprint

Since you won’t be using your car as much, you will be helping clear out the air for you and others by reducing your environmental footprint by reducing you share of greenhouse gas emissions. A car releases an average of 1.2 pounds of carbon dioxide per mile while a cyclist releases only 0.7 grams per mile.
